September is National Cholesterol Education month, and since 1 in 3 adults battle high cholesterol, we wanted to let you in on a few secrets that can help you maintain healthy levels of cholesterol.

The key to keeping your cholesterol at hand is to make healthy eating choices and maintain a healthy weight. Here are a handful of do's and don'ts when it comes to diet.

  • Limit foods high in saturated fat such as cheese, fatty meats, dairy desserts and tropical oils (such as palm oil). Foods higher in saturated fat, may be high in cholesterol.
  • Eat foods naturally high in fiber, such as oatmeal and beans and unsaturated fats which can be found in avocado, olive oil and nuts. These foods help prevent and manage high levels of low density LDP (or bad cholesterol) while increasing high HDL (or good cholesterol) levels.

We encourage you to overall just eat a well balanced diet full of protein, grains and vegetables loaded with nutrition.

If you haven't had your cholesterol checked within the last 5 years, we would highly recommend doing so. There are no signs or symptoms of high cholesterol, but if not diagnosed and treated properly, these deposits of waxy, fat like substances narrow your arteries, putting you at risk for heart disease and stroke.

Here's to health, happiness and knowledge!
